The Gaelic League Heritage Foundation exists to to support the mission and works of the Gaelic League/Irish American Club of Detroit.
Founded in 2025, the GLHF is a nonprofit, volunteer-run entity established to raise funds and provide and organizational support for the renovation of the historic GL/IA Club headquarters, located at 2068 Michigan Avenue, Detroit, MI 48216.
The Foundation’s Aims
The GHLF intends to provide funding for qualified building improvements to the Gaelic League Clubhouse, such as much-needed renovations to the kitchen, hall, and exterior walls. These enhancements will allow the Gaelic League to continue to maintain its status as a highly-regarded gathering space for a wide variety of people and organizations.
Fund Building Enhancements
A high priority for the GLHF is to fund programming in the Gaelic League Clubhouse Hall. This will increase the involvement of Irish American Club members and residents of the Corktown neighorhood in the Gaelic League. The GLHF will support the club as it expands its already wide range of cultural programming, including traditional Irish music and dance, educational and historical lectures, and Irish language lessons.
Support Cultural Programming
Expand Opportunities for Children & Families
Children at the Gaelic League enjoy many of the cultural offerings listed above and more. Over the past several years, the GL/IA has hosted children’s story time, Gaelic craftmaking events, and Irish step dancing. With the GLHF’s support, the Club plans to expand opportunities for children’s involvement, including an Irish Cultural Camp and Irish sports, such as hurling and football.
“My mom is a first-generation American whose parents were born in Ireland. I don’t know if they ever visited the Club, but I’m sure if they did, they’d have felt it was a home away from home. It’s the real deal.
—Ned, Irish American Club Member
“I grew up going to the Gaelic League and now, as an adult, I can’t imagine it ever going away. It’s such an important part of how I stay connected to my culture.
—Jordan, Irish-American Club Member
Why Our Work Matters
“I joined the Irish American club in my twenties, when I began having kids, and it’s awesome to see my daughter enjoying Irish culture at the same age I was when I first started going. It’s truly a family thing that I hope is around forever.”
—Kim, Irish American Club Member
